ELOÏSE LIKES WRITING: DRAWING CATS
I've noticed a lot of examples of artists who render a superb likeness of the human form, but are really bad at drawing cats.
Some theories about why this might be:
- To depict something well, you need your subject to sit still for a long time, and it's easier to get a human to do that than a cat.
- It's hard to depict things without good reference images to work off of, and in the past there weren't that many of cats.
- In art school, artists study human anatomy, but not animal anatomy, and most people aren't good at depicting something they haven't studied.
- You need a lot of exposure to something to fully remember what it looks like, and in the past domesticated cats were uncommon enough that artists were fuzzy on the details.
Bonus bad cat, not included with the above examples because some sources describe it as intentional:
